Corry Engelbrechtof Wenona, a psychology major, was named the 21stCentury Scholar for 2008 Aug. 28 in La Salle.

Other finalists for the award were Alicia Fiorentini of Utica, nursing; Sarah Lavieri of La Salle, speech pathology; and, Tiffany Seibert of Hennepin, nursing.

Engelbrecht and the finalists, all second-year students who have achieved a 3.5 GPA or better, submitted a minimum 500-word essay and a recommendation letter from a faculty member. Each also had to have the recommendation of an IVCC Dean.

Engelbrecht received $2,000 for the 2008-09 academic year and the other nominees $750 each toward education expenses.

The 21stCentury Scholars Society, the IVCC Foundation’s first giving society, was created in 2007. Membership in the society, which stands currently at 34 members, is open to the public and requires a $500 annual commitment.

Members and student scholars are honored at an annual dinner in August.  Wanda Kember of Ottawa was the first 21st Century Scholar. Lori Ellis of Princeton, Ahmad Hayek of Ottawa and Luanne Aussemof Ottawa were 2007 finalists.

The Society’s mission is to provide financial assistance to some of IVCC’s highest achieving students through the creation of an endowment. For information contact Fran Brolley, IVCC Director of Development, at (815) 224-0524.
